2019/11/05

On the evening of November 5, 2019, President Xi Jinping and his wife Peng Liyuan met with President Emmanuel Macron of France and his wife Brigitte Macron at the Yuyuan Garden in Shanghai.

At nightfall when the lights were lit, waterside pavilions and verandas at the Yuyuan Garden shone brightly. Upon arrival at the Yuyuan Garden, Emmanuel Macron and his wife were warmly welcomed by Xi Jinping and Peng Liyuan. The two couples exchanged greetings with each other.

The two couples walked in the garden and enjoyed the garden scenery in south of the Yangtze River.

The two couples took their seats at the Yuhuatang. Xi Jinping and Peng Liyuan recalled with pleasure the visit to France in March this year when they were warmly received by Emmanuel Macron and his wife. Xi Jinping said, President Emmanuel Macron is welcome to visit China again and come to Shanghai for the first time. Shanghai is the epitome of China's reform, opening-up, development and progress, reflecting the evolution of China's relations with the world since modern times. I hope this visit will help you understand Shanghai and China. My wife and I choose the Yuyuan Garden to treat Mr. President and your wife so that you can appreciate the beauty of Chinese gardens and traditional Chinese culture. Despite the different forms of cultural and artistic expression, cultures and the arts bring people from different countries closer together. That said, different cultures can co-exist in harmony. As representatives of Eastern and Western civilizations, China and France should respect each other, exchange with and learn from each other.

Emmanuel Macron thanked Xi Jinping and Peng Liyuan for their warm and thoughtful arrangements for him and his wife. Emmanuel Macron said, I am deeply impressed by President Xi Jinping's keynote speech at the opening ceremony of the second China International Import Expo (CIIC) this morning. The French side appreciates and welcomes China's further opening-up. France is committed to enhancing international cooperation, and building an open world economy for mutual benefit and win-win results. France wishes the second CIIE a complete success. Emmanuel Macron said, Shanghai amazes me as I see China's openness and future here. Both France and China boast a splendid civilization and advocate inclusiveness and mutual learning among different civilizations. I look forward to a successful state visit to inject new connotation into the future development of France-China relations.

The two couples also watched performances of Kunqu Opera and Shaoxing Opera. Chinese artists performed selections of the French comedy Les Chaises in the form of Kunqu Opera.

The two couples said goodbye over the nine-turning zigzag bridge and agreed to meet in Beijing tomorrow.
